My 97 Cad Catera has a knock. My mech. says it's probably a rod bearing, piston hitting head. Any other ideas? - belt cads
Then go long enough to change the pistons to make the valves? The engine runs well and has good oil pressure..?

The caterer speed nightmares known which can be sold as sonn as you.
Possible but not likely. There were other signs of failure.
Without actually the noise, I trust what you say, so if your a mechanic you trust, really a problem.
My recommendation would be to replace the motor with a motor. The cost of the engine is important, but when everything from jobs and costs in not more than the repair, and that the security is much better.
Good Luck
I doubt very much that the piston is hitting the head. I suggest you have a new mechanical skills, which is a suspect.
If I remember correctly, the engine in the Opel Catera uses a timing chain not a belt. Not really break belt. Suddenly. As a rule, with disastrous results. Supply chains can be stretched, but if the engine is properly maintained, should be on the engine. The automatic clamping device that prevents any movement of the valve control.
Without consultation, it is difficult to say what is safe. A beat a little faster disappears under a moderate slowdown is likely to affect rod. If it is a continuous shot that does not change with engine load, is probably not a camshaft.
Anyway, you need rather quickly. Is garbage in the system of oil and oil filter plugging is traded for a few miles. Once this happens, the bypass valve in the oil filter open and the garbage that circulates through the engine and speedGrind everything to pieces. The best option is a factory replacement engine revised. But before he throws a fatal error. If you throw a stick, there is no refund of the central charge of the old machine - in the vicinity could be a great with this engine.
